The act of hatred that is Quran burning that so destroys tolerance of religion is so opposed to the core principles of America that it should be obvious to everyone. It is one thing to have strong beliefs as to who will inherit the kingdom of God. And indeed, there are people tolerated in the United States who don't believe there is a kingdom of God. I have strong views myself. But my theological views also retain a sense of respect of the personal beliefs of others.
But the hatred manifested by book burning is really not Christian by any sound interpretation of the New Testament. Even
Sarah Palin, who I don't agree with on just about everything, stands for the American ideal of tolerance of all religious views when it comes to book burning. However, while she opposes book burning, she is intolerant of the mosque two blocks from 911. I could go into the real causes of 911 but you can see the 911 links on my line of links to the left of this article. Palin is really attacking freedom of religion, but of course, it is all political for her.
So this guy in Florida needs to go have a glass of wine and calm down. People should stop donating to him. And if anyone does donate to him because of his stand,
shame on you. Book burning has occurred in history, and has actually been in vogue for thousands of years. It has been said that burning books is one step removed to burning human beings.
Here are some examples of very recent book burnings that are just simply stupid:
"In 1948, at Binghamton, New York children - overseen by priests, teachers, and parents - publicly burned around 2000 comic books. As part of Stalin's efforts to stamp out Jewish culture in the Soviet Union in the late 1940's and early 1950's, the Judaica collection in the library of Birobidzhan, capital of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast on the Chinese border, was burned. In 1953 Senator Joseph McCarthy recited before his subcommittee and the press a a list of supposedly pro-communist authors whose works his aide Roy Cohn found in State Department libraries in Europe. The State Department bowed to McCarthy and ordered its overseas librarians to remove from their shelves "material by any controversial persons, Communists, fellow travelers, etc. and some were burned. In 195455 by order of the Justice Department, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) burned several tons of Wilhelm Reich's publications that mentioned "orgone energy" In May 1981 Sinhalese police officers on rampage burned the public library of Jaffna, northern Sri Lanka; a huge library collection, which was the second largest library in Asia, was destroyed: 97,000 books and very rare collection of ancient palm leaf volumes were among them. The novel The Satanic Verses has been the subject of bookburnings by Muslims, for instance at Bolton and Bradford in 1989."
Update: A protestor objecting to the planned burning of the Quran was shot at a NATO base in northern Afghanistan. This dickwad of a pastor deserves part of the blame. It would not have happened had this crazy stunt not been announced.
